We are often led to think compassion and wisdom differ greatly, that it is emotion versus intellect. In reality, our compassion comes from our wisdom. Through all experience, good and bad, we gain the knowledge that shapes our lives and gives us the ability to identify with one another. This empathy felt towards others and the desire to rid others of suffering is compassion. Native culture and faith embody compassion in many ways. Native American belief is that knowledge is gained through experience and everything has the potential to teach a lesson. From this basic principle comes the values of respect, honor, and love for the earth and its inhabitants. To live in harmony with animals, nature, and fellow man while being helpful and kind wherever it is needed.
